First National Training Group Completed by Von Forell Instinctive Training Systems

First National Training Group completed.

Dear National participants, this is a big thank you for your participation towards what was a very successful weekend despite the very cold weather. For your information it was the coldest weekend in 6 years. Your input was invaluable, and your skills were excellent. I am very impressed that so many people are striving to work together towards achieving a National aim in unifying our beliefs and training systems.

I feel the need to say that every presenter wishes to convey their massage in a logical and sequential manner. I believe to the best of my ability the information presented during our weekend together was accurate and up to date.

But, there lies a potential problem.

Although there are certain canine learning laws that are set in stone, there is always the potential that beliefs and opinions on how to achieve training aims can change and as such the information presented was relative to the time of the presentation. No one knows what the future holds and the information presented were my beliefs, views and opinions based on the understanding I have today.

Books, Dvd and Seminars generate tremendous amounts of information as much as they do conflict and misunderstandings. Dog training is an evolution and everyone is at a different stage in their evolution and therefore their understanding. Because of this very position each and every one of you will interpret the information presented in many different ways. This phenomenon may create the urge in you to tell others the errors of their ways. Before you feel the desire to impart your newly found knowledge, I ask you to please consider that your interpretation of the material presented this weekend may not have been received as intended and that you should first ensure the information works for you, validating your comprehension. At the very least the information should make sense and prove effective for you first and foremost.

What I am asking you to be mindful of is what is called the Dunning Kruger effect;

The Dunning–Kruger effect is a cognitive bias in which unskilled people make poor decisions and reach erroneous conclusions, but their incompetence denies them the cognitive ability to recognize their mistakes.

The unskilled therefore suffer from illusory superiority, rating their ability as above average, much higher than it actually is, while the highly skilled underrate their own abilities, suffering from illusory inferiority.

It is a case of: “You don’t even know enough to realize just how little you actually know” so please do your very best to not be one of these people.

To conclude:

I must point out that I am not one to believe that I am always right and I am very aware that extreme rigidity in beliefs and dangerous illusions can work against you; hence why I am very interested in engaging into future discussions and training with you all as often as possible because for me the concept of knowledge is continuous learning and I am constantly learning from you all.

I have realized one thing and that is that “imperfect understanding is a human condition there is no shame in being wrong, only in failing to correct our mistakes”.

Thank you all for being such powerful human beings and for your attendance. I do appreciate the opportunity to share some of my thoughts and look forward to seeing you all again at the second event.
